Amsterdam hotel rooms are notoriously small — the canal houses were built on narrow plots and the staircases are steep. "Compact" in an Amsterdam hotel listing means very small. Check room size reviews carefully before booking.
Book early: Amsterdam is one of the most visited cities in Europe. For summer visits, book 2–3 months in advance. For King's Day (27 April), book 4–6 months in advance.
