Best Time to Visit Germany: Month-by-Month Guide (2026)

10 min read June 2026 EasyTrip Editorial Team

Germany is a year-round destination with something genuinely compelling in every season — from the Christmas markets of December to the beer gardens of summer, the Rhine Valley in autumn, and the ski slopes of the Bavarian Alps in winter. The best time to visit depends on what you want to experience. This guide breaks it all down.

Germany Weather Overview

Germany has a temperate continental climate with four distinct seasons. Summers (June–August) are warm and sunny, averaging 20–28°C in most regions. Winters (December–February) are cold, with temperatures regularly below freezing in Bavaria and the east. Spring and autumn are mild and often beautiful.

The south (Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg) tends to be warmer in summer and colder in winter than the north. Berlin and the northeast have a more continental climate — hotter summers and colder winters than the west. The Rhine Valley and southwest Germany have the mildest climate overall.

Spring (March–May): Excellent for Cities

Spring is one of the best times to visit Germany's cities. Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, and Cologne come alive as the weather warms, outdoor café culture returns, and the parks fill with blossom.

April and May are particularly good. Temperatures reach 15–20°C, the tourist crowds are manageable, and accommodation prices are below summer peak. The Rhine Valley in May, with the vineyards turning green and the river traffic resuming, is one of the most beautiful sights in Germany.

Easter is a major holiday in Germany — expect busy roads and some attraction closures on Good Friday and Easter Monday.

Summer (June–August): Peak Season

Summer is the most popular time to visit Germany. The long days, warm temperatures (22–28°C), and outdoor festival culture make it the most enjoyable season for most visitors.

Beer gardens — Munich's beer gardens open in April but reach their peak in summer. The English Garden's beer gardens, the Hofbräuhaus, and the gardens of the Nymphenburg Palace are all at their best on a warm summer evening.

Outdoor festivals — Germany has an extraordinary summer festival calendar. The Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, the Bayreuth Wagner Festival, the Berlin Philharmonic's open-air concerts, and hundreds of local wine and folk festivals fill the calendar from June through August.

The downside: popular destinations like Neuschwanstein Castle, the Rhine Valley, and the Romantic Road get very busy in July and August. Book accommodation well in advance.

Autumn (September–November): Oktoberfest and Wine Harvest

Autumn is arguably the best season to visit Germany. The combination of Oktoberfest, the wine harvest festivals, and the spectacular autumn foliage in the forests and river valleys makes September and October particularly special.

Oktoberfest (Munich) — The world's most famous beer festival runs for 16–18 days from mid-September to the first weekend of October. Over 6 million visitors attend. Book accommodation in Munich 6–12 months in advance if you want to attend — the city fills completely.

Wine harvest (Weinlese) — The Rhine, Mosel, and Palatinate wine regions hold harvest festivals throughout September and October. The Mosel in October, with the vineyards turning gold and red above the river, is one of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe.

November is quieter and greyer, but the Christmas market preparations begin in late November — the first markets open on the last weekend of November.

Winter (December–February): Christmas Markets and Skiing

Germany in December is magical. The Christmas markets (Weihnachtsmärkte) are among the finest in the world — Nuremberg, Cologne, Dresden, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, and Strasbourg (just across the French border) are the most famous. The markets typically run from late November through 23–24 December.

Skiing — The Bavarian Alps offer good skiing from December through March. Garmisch-Partenkirchen is the main resort, with access to the Zugspitze (Germany's highest peak). The Black Forest also has ski areas, though at lower altitude.

January and February are the quietest and cheapest months to visit German cities. Cold (often below freezing in Munich and Berlin) but atmospheric.
